WASHINGTON--More than 100 chemical plants nationwide are situated near communities of at least one million people, according to a report released last week by the Congressional Research Service.

Those plants, including more than two dozen in Texas, are attractive targets for terrorists, researchers say.

While the study names states that have plants -- Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey are three more -- it does not specify the names of the plants or the cities that they're in, according to The Associated Press.

The Congressional Research Service used data from the Environmental Protection Agency to complete the report. The EPA does not publicly release its list of chemical-manufacturing plants, oil refineries and storage facilities, due to security concerns.

As a result, the report is one of the first public state-by-state breakdowns of how close chemical plants are to population centers, the news service reported.

The report comes as the Department of Homeland Security voices support for chemical regulations.
