San Fran's BART gets $5.9M security upgrade
SAN FRANCISCO--The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District is scheduled to receive a $5.9-million security upgrade, slated for completion by 2010, which will include the installation of security cameras and improvements to the communication and infrastructure systems at BART stations.

The project will be completed by Adesta, a systems integrator based in Omaha, Neb., and will take place in the cities of San Francisco and Oakland. The project will primarily take place during night and weekend hours to avoid impacting daily transit operations.

"BART has always been on the cutting-edge of protecting our passengers," said Zoyd Luce, a board member of BART, in a prepared statement. "That said, we are constantly trying to stay one step ahead of those who would try to do us harm. We must do everything we can to protect BART because it is the backbone of the Bay Area's transportation network and is critical to the economic survival of the region."
