LONG BEACH, Calif.--It's turning out to be a banner year: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport last week confiscated 18,560 pairs of fake Nike sneakers and 252 pairs of generic shoes.
As of mid-year, CBP has seized more fake goods than in fiscal year 2007, which totaled more than $20.6 million worth of counterfeit products. Kevin Weeks, director of CBP Los Angeles Field Operations, told the Imperial Valley News that 2008 could be a record year for CBP seizures of counterfeit goods entering Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport. The appraised domestic value of this shipment was $521,000, the newspaper reported. The items had a street value worth $2.6 million.

Two shipping containers that arrived at the Port of Long Beach from China were declared as "drainage pipeline fitting," but CBP officers discovered the contents and seized the goods for bearing a counterfeit trademark.
Nike officials told CBP that they had not authorized the importer or exporter to use their trademark.
The 18,560 pairs of fake Nike Air Force 1 '07 and Air Jordan 4 shoes will be destroyed.
