TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--The Florida Department of Law Enforcement last week rolled out the BusinessSafe program, a new counter-terrorism program that provides Florida businesses access to e-mail and cell phone alerts on security related threats.
The free, web-based initiative is accessible to businesses of all types. Alerts will be sent on an as-needed basis and will include domestic security-related breaking news, possible threats, suspicious activity and specific preparedness and prevention techniques, the South Florida Sun-Sentintel reported.
"We're hoping to educate companies on how to protect their business, protect the state of Florida and have better communication with us," Amos Rojas, special agent for the FDLE Miami region, told the newspaper.
Officials say the program could be helpful to retailers, restaurants, malls and other businesses that draw large crowds.
Bram Bottfeld, Bank Atlantic Center's director of security and safety, praised the program and urged companies to build strong relationships with law enforcement. The Bank Atlantic Center has forged partnerships with local, state and federal authorities, Bottfeld told the newspaper.
State law enforcement officials are also advising businesses to report suspicious or unusual activity through BusinessSafe's online reporting form.
The program cost Florida about $6,100 to set up and will cost about $4,500 per year to run.
