Security increased at three oil refineries after threats
BILLINGS, Mont.--Three refineries here last week increased security after the FBI began investigating potential threats to the facilities.

FBI officials said the threat appeared to be directed to refineries in the local area, which include ConocoPhillips' facility here, Exxon Mobil Corp.'s plant in Lockwood, Mont., and CHS Energy's refinery in Laurel, Mont., reported the Associated Press.

Mike Wirkowski, Conoco manager, told the news agency the threat was "vague" and "non-specific," adding that the company stepped up security to be proactive. Refining operations had not been affected, he said.

Exxon Mobil spokeswoman Pam Malek said the company's refinery was made aware of the threat April 30, and elevated its security procedures by adding Yellowstone County deputies at its gates.

The three refineries have combined crude distillation capacity of 173,000 barrels per day, according to U.S. government data.
