NRF, ICSC team up to battle ORC
WASHINGTON—The National Retail Federation and International Council of Shopping Centers will combine efforts to curb retail theft and organized retail crime through a mall security training video.

Working with organized retail crime experts who provided content and actual footage of criminal acts, the narrated video includes images of typical organized retail crime ring behavior, in addition to descriptions of common methods of operation. The training video targeted toward mall security officers offers tips on how to identify organized retail crime. The materials are expected to be used by security officers in malls and shopping centers throughout the country.

“Retailers and shopping centers are dealing with serious financial losses and security issues because of organized retail crime,” said NRF Vice President of Loss Prevention Joseph LaRocca. “This training video will teach security officers tips including the quantity of merchandise gang members steal, the tools used to defeat the security sensors and tags, and behavioral tendencies that criminals may exhibit.”

Highly trained professional shoplifters have formed criminal alliances that are specifically targeting retailers. The FBI estimates that organized retail crime costs the retail industry $30 billion each year, and according to NRF’s 2007 organized retail crime survey, 79 percent of the retailers polled were victims of organized retail crime.

“Organized retail crime impacts everyone involved in the shopping center industry and it is important that shopping center security officers and retail loss prevention professionals work to together to prevent this type of crime,” said Malachy Kavanagh, vice president of communications for the ICSC. “This training program is the first step in an ongoing effort between our associations to put and end to organized retail crime”
